OSSTF D12 GSA’s

LGBTQ Positive Space Poster Contest

Deadline:  Postmarked March 31st 2008                                      **REVISED**

What is a Positive Space?

A Positive Space challenges the patterns of silence that continues to marginalise lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender and queer students, staff and faculty even in environments with anti-discriminatory and inclusive policies.   A "Positive Space" is one where the individual contributes to the creation of an environment that welcomes sexual diversity. It suggests that you are ready to respond favourably to those who are marginalised because of sexual orientation or gender identity, or who themselves feel hesitant to speak out positively. It also suggests that you are prepared to challenge discriminatory language and stereotypical talk, even if it is said in jest.  (excerpted from “Positive Space at U of T” http://www.sa.utoronto.ca/details.php?wcid=60).

Guidelines

1.     Entries will be no larger than 8 ˝” x 11”.  Each entry will be the work of an individual artist.  Each artist may enter no more than two times.  There are two categories:  junior (grades 9 and 10) and senior (grades 11 and 12).  The winner of each category will receive a $50.00 award.

2.     Posters may be colour or greyscale (black and white) in any hand-crafted art form (including pencil, pen & ink, paint, charcoal) or digital media (using originally scanned or photographed images only).

3.     The poster should include the phrase “Positive Space” and encourage the creation of such an environment in any school (What is a Positive Space?), through imagery and dynamic phrasing.

4.     Each entry (mailed or digital) must include the student’s full name, age and grade, school address, telephone, and email attached to the poster.

5.     Posters are judged according to the quality of drawing and illustration’s ability to grab the viewer’s attention while encouraging a Positive Space in secondary schools.

·        OSSTF D12 GSA reserves the right to alter the final poster design (add D12 logo).

·        All submissions become the property of the OSSTF D12 GSA.  No entries will be returned, so please keep all your files and/or scan of your work.
