What can I be assigned to teach?

What can I be assigned to teach?

A secondary teacher in the TDSB can be assigned to teach any course for which they hold qualifications.

The Board must seek formal consent from a teacher to teach a course for which they are not qualified, including at the grade 9 and grade 10 level.  In order to formalize and implement this consent, both teacher and prinicpal must sign a Mutual Consent Form.

If a teacher and principal agree that a course taught by mutual consent has been successfully completed, the teacher may, at the appropriate time in the school year (usually late January) add that qualification under Experienced But Not Certificated on the Seniority Verification Form.  Once a course is added to this form the teacher may be time tabled into programs requiring that specific qualification without further consent being sought.

If you have added qualifications to your Seniority Verification Form under Experienced But Not Certificated and you no longer wish to be time tabled into those programs, you may remove those qualifications from your Seniority Verification Form (again usually late January).  Those qualifications can not be added back on to your form until you have once again taught under mutual consent and you and your principal agree that the course was successfully completed.

The Education Act restricts the assignment of Special Education, French, ESL, and Technical Education to those teachers who hold the appropriate qualification.  Consent from a non-qualified teacher may not be sought, nor can a teacher offer to teach in these areas without the appropriate qualification.

The Education Act prohibits the removal of qualifications from a teacher's certificate of qualification.

If you have questions about your time table, or what you are qualified to teach, or if your principal has asked you to consider giving mutual consent to teach in area for which you do not currently hold qualifications and you have questions, contact your Executive Officer.
